AMTRA, home of SQPs - your animal medicines advisors

AMTRA (Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority) is a not-for-profit organisation, supporting the long term future of the SQP (animal medicines advisor) sector, managing the registration for over 6000 SQPs.

SQPs prescribe and supply certain veterinary medicines, acting professionally, following the rules of the Regulations and the SQP Code of Practice. They contribute to animal health and, for farm livestock, farm profitability.

AMTRA hosts a growing range of CPD for SQPs, with modules relevant to all classes of SQP. Get immediate feedback and points are added immediately.

NEW: Season one of the SCOPS Podcasts.

AMTRA has unveiled the results of its biggest ever industry survey, carried out to help gather evidence and insights from SQPs, animal owners, retailers and veterinary teams. Over 900 responses were received.

The overarching results from the survey are very positive and highlight that the SQP role continues to be highly valued and is recognised as having a positive impact on animal health and welfare across a broad spectrum of stakeholders.

Becoming an AMTRA SQP - an animal medicines advisor - starts with enrolling as a candidate with AMTRA. There is a significant commitment in terms of learning.

Our Base, Companion, Avian and Vet Nurse modules are at Higher Education Level 4; our Equine and Farm modules are at Level 5, reflecting AMTRA's commitment to standards and the quality of prescribers on AMTRA's Register.

Our podcast 'Information on bluetongue for prescribing SQPs' provides information for SQPs to help if farmers ask them for bluetongue advice - even though bluetongue is outside their direct remit, SQPs are a frequent and trusted source of advice for farmers.

Drop-in sessions are now scheduled to the end of 2025. They are aimed at candidates sitting exams in that exam round, and trainers and others supporting such individuals.

An exam drop-in session is for questions regarding the Systems Access Test; technical specifications for your laptop; exam day process etc. It is not a revision session and will not cover modular content.

This first of its kind Diploma in Animal Medicines Advice is the only formal post-registration qualification for SQPs (animal medicines advisors). It allows candidates to build on their academic credits achieved during their SQP training, and develop additional skills and knowledge to further enhance their expertise.

With between 6000 and 7000 AMTRA SQPs, they work in a huge range of roles. Meet some of them and hear about their work...
