Module Descriptors (Syllabus)

Introduction

The AMTRA suite of modules has been developed to provide a means of accrediting learning undertaken as part of a professional requirement. The modules are divided into three groups:

  • SQP Conversions
  • Veterinary Nurses
  • New modular approach

SQP conversions

The first group of modules is to provide a means of accrediting the learning of those that have undertaken the AMTRA Merchants SQP or AMTRA Saddlers SQP certificate prior to the end of 2005. In these cases they will need to convert this qualification to the new certificate by the end of October 2008. The AMTRA Merchants SQP and the AMTRA Saddlers SQP are separate and well understood courses and the module descriptors reflect these differences. The conversion modules required to bring these SQP into line with the 'post October 2005' requirements are similar in their outcomes and in their indicative content. Indeed a single module descriptor could have been produced to encompass the requirements. However, for reasons of clarity for the candidates it was deemed more appropriate to produce separate module descriptors, of a more focused nature. Therefore, in reading the module descriptors AMTRA Merchants Conversion and AMTRA Saddlers Conversion the similarities are intentional, the differences for those not involved in the industry will seem minor, but they are significant to the candidates. The system is illustrated below:

Veterinary Nurses

The second group which require attention are veterinary nurses, who have gained much of the knowledge and understanding required to operate as an SQP in the future, but require a different Conversion. The modules AMTRA Veterinary Nurses: Base and AMTRA Veterinary Nurses: Conversion have taken these differences into account within their outcomes and their indicative content. Again this could have been achieved by a broad set of outcomes common with SQP conversion described above but at the cost of loss of focus for the candidates. The modules as presented were deemed a more appropriate route, as illustrated below:

New SQP modular approach

These modules will in time replace the modules as described above, but will run alongside them for a period up to the end of October 2008. Students will follow one path or the other. Therefore, similarities in the module outcome, between those discuss above, and the new modular programme should not be an issue.

There are four certificate level modules in this group:

  • AMTRA SQP BASE (10 credits)
  • AMTRA SQP EQUINE (5 credits)
  • AMTRA SQP COMPANION ANIMAL (5 credits)
  • AMTRA SQP FARM ANIMAL (15 credits)

These modules can be studied one at a time but are more likely to be used in the following ways:

  • BASE + EQUINE
  • BASE + COMPANION ANIMAL
  • BASE + EQUINE + COMPANION ANIMAL
  • BASE + EQUINE + COMPANION ANIMAL + FARM ANIMAL

These combinations will result in AMTRA Professional Certificates and eligibility for entry onto the:

  • J-SQP
  • C-SQP
  • E-SQP
  • R-SQP
