Information for SQPs

2012 Renewals

All SQPs who are eligible to renew their SQP status for 2012 were sent a letter in the post or an email on 3 or 4 November 2011. Any SQP who did not receive either a letter or an email from us about their renewal should contact the AMTRA office immediately.

All employers with 10 or more SQPs have agreed to manage the annual renewal on behalf of their SQPs, and so their SQPs do not need to do anything regarding their renewal, but should login to the AMTRA website using the password we supplied, to check that contact details are correct.

SQPs from smaller employers will also have received a login which they can use to pay their renewal fee online, and a form which can be used if you are unable to use the online payment system.

The AMTRA Council & Board meetings on 29 September 2011 set the fees:

SQPs qualified to prescribe and supply farm animal medicines: £62.92 + VAT = £75.50 (when paid by 30 November)
Other SQPs: £43.33 + VAT = £52.00 (when paid by 30 November).

Payment is subject to AMTRA's standard terms and conditions.

A 5% discount is available in 2011 to individuals and smaller companies using the online payment system and to larger companies managing their renewals in bulk.

CPD

All SQPs are required to undertake a certain amount of CPD which has been accredited by AMTRA. The first CPD period ran until 30June 2011, by which time the required number of points must have been earned (or an exemption granted for exceptional circumstances). Those who didn't gain the required number of points by 30 June 2011 will not be able to renew their SQP status for 2012 unless they can demonstrate that they are still competent by passing a written exam during the second half of 2011.

Code of Practice and VMD Guidance

All SQPs are required to abide by the current version of the Code of Practice: the latest version is the 2011 version, coming into force from 1 October 2011. AMTRA's Professional Standards Committee and Board will consider written complaints about SQPs alleged to have breached the Code. More information on complaints procedures...

Additionally, SQPs are strongly encouraged to read relevant numbers of VMD's Veterinary Medicines Guidance Notes, in particular number 3: Veterinary Medicinal Products – Prescription, Distribution Categories and Supply.

Veterinary Medicines Regulations

The main regulations are the Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2011 which came into force on 1 October 2011. The changes are not significant for most SQPs except for some the revision of the exemptions concerning animals kept on domestic premises, to remove the ceiling on weight of medicated feeding stuff that can be manufactured from premixtures.

Your representatives

The AMTRA Council includes a number of people who have been elected by SQPs to represent them on Council.

If you have questions or concerns or proposals for AMTRA, then of course do contact the AMTRA office. But if you would like to contact your representatives, please do so. More information on SQP representatives...

SQP Locums

AMTRA offers a short list of SQP locums (that is, someone who temporarily stands in for another SQP) to enable a business to continue to prescribe and supply POM-VPS and NFA-VPS medicines while the customary SQP is absent for whatever reason.  More on SQP locums...
